Day 1 of this lesson:

These first grade students learned about their local zoo and analyzed selected ceramic artworks from Lesley Anne Greene and other ceramic artists, as we talked about the animals that are in their local zoo. These students were able to identify different types of animals in the zoo and create them out of clay, along with learning about texture, shape, symmetry, and pattern.

Summary:

1. Students will analyze ceramic pieces featuring various animals from the zoo by Lesley Anne Greene and other ceramic artists.

2. Students will create a zoo animal out of clay.

3. Students will share their process of creating their zoo animal out of clay to their peers.

Day 2 of this lesson:

These first grade students learned about their local zoo and analyzed selected ceramic artworks from Michael and Sumati Colepitts, as we talked about the animals that are in their local zoo. These students were able to paint their clay animals out of tempera paint, while learning about contrast, color, warm/cool colors, and primary/secondary colors.

Summary:

1. Students will analyze ceramic artwork that features colorful animals from the zoo by Michael and Sumati Colepitts.

2. Students will demonstrate skills & craftsmanship by painting their ceramic animals.

3. Students will share their responses of the artwork they made to their peers.
