Geometric Animals.
I found this lesson on Deep Space Sparkle, but in summary, my 4th and 5th grade students learned about a Contemporary Hispanic artist, Okuda San Miguel, for Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). Okuda loves to paint and/or sculpt animals, filling them with a polygon pattern. I followed along to the lesson Deep Space Sparkle provided, however, I had the students choose any silhouetted animal they would like. Bear was the easiest, so most chose it. I also allowed the students to design a background that would go along with their animal, such as a bone pattern for a dog. In the DSS lesson, it has the students use watercolors. However, I gave the students an option between markers & water, watercolors, or tempera cakes.
