Here’s some of the student work from this lesson!

Romare Bearden Collages.

My 5th grade students were learning about the Harlem Renaissance in their homeroom classes so I thought it would be a great opportunity to integrate that into the art room. The Harlem Renaissance was a time when the arts thrived. The students learned about Romare Bearden, a Harlem Renaissance artist from Charlotte, NC (local to my area too!).

The students were instructed to think of a story. The story could be nonfictional/fictional. They would cut out images from magazines and glue them onto a piece of paper to create a work of art. When they were finished, they wrote a paragraph or two explaining their story/work of art.
